It might be possible and helpful to take some time off from your doctorate – something that is often referred to as an ‘interruption of study’ or ‘study break’. This can be particularly helpful if your life circumstances change (be it finances, family considerations, illness).
If you are considering a study break, check that the regulations governing your programme allow for this. (For example, some international visas do not allow it.) For more information and help, please check with your own institution what their policies and guidance are for taking an interruption of study.
